Federal Court Grants Lai Stay of Removal

June 1, 2006 - Yesterday, David Matas, counsel for Mr. Lai Cheong Sing, argued that Lai’s removal from Canada should be stayed pending his application for leave and judicial review before the Federal Court of Canada. Mr. Matas provided the Court material on the criminal code of China and an article on International Human Rights Standard to the Court in support of its argument that Lai would face irreparable harm if returned to China. Today, the Honourable Madam Justice Layden-Stevenson granted Lai a stay of execution until the Federal Court of Canada could decide his application for leave and judicial review.
